Product: Special K Commercial
To whom it may concern:
I am writing to you in regards to a commercial
that I have been seeing recently - once again -
for Special K Cereal. I wrote a letter dated
January 22, 2004 to you concerning this
commercial before, and I see that you are
once again showing it. It shows meat hitting a
scale to Moo and Oink sounds. The commercial
is cute, but I wanted you to know that I am
moderately offended by the use of these animal
sounds. I feel that the use of these sounds is
indeed unnecessary and somewhat offensive.
This can very much be considered degrading.
It encourages a stigma to those struggling with
weight issues.
Society encourages quite a bit of pressure on
those who are struggling with their weight. The
weight of the gaze of this stigma can have a
damaging and tragic effect. More sensitivity
and awareness is, in fact, needed.
In the future, Please show more sensitivity
when producing your advertisements. I would
like to see this commercial altered to remove
these unnecessary animal sounds - or not
shown at all. Try to remain a responsible
company that shows the awareness and
sensitivity to not encourage stigma. Thank
you for your time.
