Republicans back away from Schiavo
.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 (UPI) --
.
Former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., joined other GOP front-runners this week in saying Congress should have stayed out of the case of Terri Schiavo.
.
Thompson had already left the Senate in 2005 when many Republicans voted to get the case into federal courts. Florida courts had ruled that Schiavo's husband had the right to have her feeding tube removed, 15 years after she lapsed into an apparent vegetative state.
.
While a number of Republican politicians and pundits embraced the cause of Schiavo's parents and siblings at the time, most have moved away from the case, The Boston Globe reported. Few office-seekers or attendees at the "Values Voters" Summit in Washington last weekend mentioned Schiavo, even though her brother, Bobby Schindler, was there.
.
Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas, who backed the Schindlers in 2005 and continues to support their position, ended his presidential campaign last week.
.
U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., voted with other Republicans on the case in 2005 but started backing away from that position quickly and now says it should have been a state matter. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani say they agree.

.
As far as I am concerned it is always right to be on the side of life not in the starving of someone to death.
.
By certain Republicans moving away from this difficult case says to me they are not firmly on the side of the disabled and infirmed. It tells me that their views are only tied into as being solid as what would be the next public outcry/crisis-on what would be the "politically correct" thing to do.
.
I want someone who shows themselves to be consistent.
.
I already know about former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's liberal views. I have already decided to not vote for John McCain who shows once again to me he should have decided to be a Democrat instead. I will keep this in mind as far as former Gov. Mitt Romney who has been accused of not being consistently on the side of life - at one time supporting abortion and now changed his mind.
.
My child was disabled and required a feeding tube.
.
I am firmly on the side of the Schindlers.
.
I believe that they were right in trying to fight for their daughter with everything that they had.
.
For the Republicans to move away from this issue says that they are not firmly on the side of life, family, the disabled, infirmed or society's weakest members.
.
I'm supposed to trust them with the difficult issues of Iraq, Afghanistan, illegal immigrants becoming a commodity, teachers gone wild, and parents buying their children automatic rifles?
.
It's bad enough that I'm hearing radical talk from some of the candidates that they plan to actually STOP THE WAR ON DRUGS? (Does that mean that Heroin will then actually be legal?) And talking radical as to actually wanting to DISMANTLE the IRS. (I suspect that the IRS might secretly have it's own army.)
.
I had hope for Thompson.
.
I was never thrilled with celebrity candidates anyway.
.
I might start looking at Joe Biden. He's a Democrat, but at least he might be more consistent with his party.
.
Not good.
.
I'm not at all liking any of the candidates.
