There is an ongoing debate in Washington as to whether it is actually worth the trouble for the U.S. Mint to continue producing copper pennies. Morley Safer reports on the issue of cents.

Should we make cents? We're talking about those insignificant one cent pieces in your pocket or purse. It may or may not come as a surprise that it now costs the U.S. Mint almost two cents to make a penny and almost a dime to make a nickel. If the economy of that eludes you, join the club.

As correspondent Morley Safer first reported in February, even in Washington, where they literally have the right to print money and where anything under a billion is chump change, there is an ongoing debate over whether it's worth the trouble to keep making cents.

Those pennies that some say don't mean anything can add over time. I bought a stamp at the post office for a penny this week - I needed a couple. I look now, and find pennies people have just thrown out or lost. I've collected quite a few now, and even found a quarter and two dollars last month on the street. (The two dollars my husband used to get paper towels and toilet paper at the dollar store.)

We've saved our pennies, and they have helped out in a pinch.
